Glulam beams being craned into place

Glulam forms iconic college design
Published:  01 September, 2010

Thirty-four 26m-long glulam beams are creating the frame for Bournville College’s iconic new £66m building.

he beams, each weighing 5.5 tonnes, are being lifted into place by a tower crane over the next nine weeks by Shepherd Construction, which is building the 250,000ft2 Learning and Resource Centre.

“It is unusual for glulam beams to be used externally and they are set to be a striking addition to the new college,” said Shepherd’s construction director Ricahrd Fielding.

Construction is due to be completed in September 2011, bringing together the three existing campuses onto one site.
