BSW pulls out of Accoya
Published: 16 April, 2009
A change in commercial focus and the strength of the euro are behind BSW Timber’s announcement that it will stop the import and distribution of leading modified wood brand Accoya from May 1.
The sawmiller, which has been Accoya “sole supplier for the UK and Ireland since 2006, said it wanted to focus on launching a wide range of new development initiatives using locally grown material, such as its recently unveiled Panel Intelligence timber build system. A BSW Timber spokesperson said the decision had been a “mutual” one with Titan Wood Ltd, a subsidiary of Accoya developer Accsys Technologies plc. Accoya has established itself as the modified wood brand leader, being used for doors, windows, decking, cladding and other wood products. It is a plantation pine product specially treated to give the wood similar properties to tropical hardwood, with a big emphasis on stability and durability. “As with all import and export trading, exchange rates do play a part in the commercial thinking and activity of an organisation or product,” said a BSW spokesperson. “The Accoya product is no different and exchange rates are an influencing factor. To the same end, distribution costs have an influence on commercial thinking and activities.” BSW and Titan are working together to ensure a direct supply route to Accoya markets in the UK – 10 joineries and five merchants are currently using the product. Titan Wood will be expanding its Accoya distribution partners, customer base and service initiatives in the near fututre. Accoya distributor Arnold Laver said it envisaged business as usual, while window manufacturer Mumford & Wood said it understands it would in the future need to import Accoya directly from Titan’s Accoya plant in Holland. BSW declined to comment on whether it was still interested in modified wood in the future. Related articles: |
