The pavilion is almost complete

Gehry’s London timber feast
Published:  14 July, 2008

Frank Gehry hopes his first English building will reflect the 'warmth of wood'

Celebrated architect Frank Gehry’s first English building is a visual timber feast.

Large Douglas fir sections are connected together to form huge beams with inner steel cores in this year’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion.

The great man himself launched the building to the press talking about the “warmth of wood” and how he’d recently been using large section timber in his projects.

Taylor Woodrow is building the structure with Arup working on engineering and specialist design.

The temporary pavilion is designed as an urban street, running from the park to the existing gallery. Glass canopies hang from the timber sections to give protection from the weather.

Live events are expected to be held at the building.
