Timber growth fuels Carronvale’s need for Norbord

Carronvale timber frame systems used in a multi-storey building

Scottish timber frame manufacturer Carronvale is upping its requirement for Norbord Sterling OSB to keep pace with growing demand for timber frame systems in Scotland

One of Scotland’s leading timber frame manufacturers is predicting its output of timber frame systems to increase as the use of timber in multi-storey, multi-occupancy buildings grows.

Carronvale Timber Frame, which supplies many major housebuilders and developers as well as its own residential development division, is set to increase its consumption of timber board products from Norbord at its Grangemouth factory to keep pace with demand.

The company switched to Norbord products in 2006 and now takes delivery of more than 30,000 sheets annually of Norbord’s Sterling OSB board for use in developments.

“Our main requirement is for 9mm and 15mm OSB3 which is used in wall sheathing, roof sarking board and flooring”, says Carronvale Managing Director, Scott Gordon.

“Approximately 80% of our timber frame products are supplied to third-party customers and many are used in the construction of multi-occupancy, flatted developments, which is a growth sector in Scotland”, explains Mr Gordon.

The remaining 20% of Carronvale’s output is consumed by Carronvale Homes which builds upmarket houses and apartment developments. The Norbord products are sold via IBT Merchants, in Grangemouth.

“About two years ago, we signed an agreement with Norbord for the supply of Sterling OSB and we now receive two bulk deliveries every month” says Mr Gordon.

Mr Gordon says local availability and reliability was a key factor in the company's decision to use Norbord. "We call off our deliveries at a week’s notice and we never have to wait,” he said.

Another advantage is the fact that Norbord’s Sterling OSB is made entirely from timber grown in sustainably-managed Scottish forests, making it a sustainable low-carbon material. “Sustainability is a major consideration for our industry today and everybody is keen to reduce their carbon footprint”, says Mr Gordon.
